What does Sziget Festival mean to you, what kind of feelings, thoughts do you have?
Sziget Festival holds a special place in my heart. Having my debut performance in my hometown at such an iconic and prestigious festival is a feeling that's hard to put into words. It's a mix of immense gratitude and excitement. Sziget is more than just a festival – it's a celebration of music, culture, and the vibrant spirit of my birth city. The thought of stepping onto that stage, surrounded by the energy of the crowd and the history of the festival, is truly humbling. It's a moment I've been looking forward to and a milestone that means a lot to me.

What inspired you to become a DJ?
This is a long one... My true passion for Techno specifically started when I was about 17 years old. Of course I had heard it often while growing up, for example when my dad was playing his vinyl's or CD's, but I wasn't all too interested in it then. In my young teen years I was mostly listening to either Hard Rock, Drum 'n Bass or 90's Hip Hop. Besides listening to music I also really enjoyed singing and playing guiter to anything within the realm of Neo Soul, R&B and Indie Pop.
Fast forward a few years is when I met my current partner who introduced me to the more modern spectrum of Techno. We met at a Drum'n'Bass event when I was 16, which is now 10 years ago. He often put on mixes by Joseph Capriati and Richie Hawtin in the car and we started going to some Techno events here and there.
Then one night in 2014, I attended a UK Techno Special by Awakenings in the Gashouder. That changed everything for me. Happa, Rebekah, Gary Beck b2b Mark Broom, Surgeon and Shifted. This was the moment that everything came together and where I discovered a style that truly resonated with me. Shortly after that night, when I was 17, I made the decision I was going to start my journey towards this craft. I started practicing a bit on my partners Numark controller and eventually followed a mixing & production course at DJ School Amsterdam. Those classes were very helpful for me to learn mixing with a more mathematical approach, mainly focused on timing and beat matching. Finding and applying my personal style and flow came gradually with time and experience playing for crowds. That's something you simply can not teach.
After that I started building my profile slowly and started having my very first gigs in Amsterdam. Fast forward to 2019 is when I had a few big milestone moments, such as winning the talent contests for Reaktor Unpolished and Soenda Festival which granted me a spot on their line-ups and marked my name on the map. The following year in February, just before the pandemic started, I had my first gig for Vault Session. It was during their weekender at Warehouse Elementenstraat and actually was one of my last gigs before everything got put on hold for all of us.
After a few lockdowns, another milestone moment happened in September 2021 during the Unmute Us Demonstration in Amsterdam. Almost all nightlife collectives came together and had their own trucks with blasting music driving through the city. Vault Sessions asked me if I wanted to play on the truck they had together with Awakenings and Reaktor, and obviously my answer was a yes! If this wasn't already exciting enough, this special moment eventually lead to my first booking at Awakenings in October 2021 during their ADE show at Ziggodome. I'm not afraid to admit I totally ugly cried when that booking came in.
Besides the specific milestones mentioned, there have been two unconditional support systems that hold a special place in my heart; Vault Sessions and RADION. Both have had an immense, if not the biggest impact on my development as an artist. To be able to call myself a Vault Sessions resident now is just incredible and such a huge honour. Playing for their events with their absolutely stellar line-ups keeps on pushing me every time to deliver the best that I possibly can, even more so as a resident.

Based in Amsterdam, how has the city's electronic music scene influenced your sound?
Being rooted in Amsterdam, the city's electronic music scene has had a profound impact on shaping my sound. The abundance of top-notch events and the open-minded nightlife culture here have been instrumental in my growth as an artist. The diverse range of influences and the constant exposure to cutting-edge sounds have seeped into my music, making it dynamic and fresh. Amsterdam's vibrant electronic music scene has truly been an integral part of my evolution.

You have a mixed heritage of Finnish and Hungarian descent, could you tell us some more about this since we are Hungarians?
Sure, I'd love to share a bit about my background! So, my mix of Finnish and Hungarian roots. My dad's from Hungary, and my mom's Finnish. I kicked things off in Budapest – that's where I made my debut in the world. But we didn't stay put for long! We headed to Marbella in Spain when I was about 2 years old. Then, life took another turn, and we ended up in Amsterdam. Been here since I was 9, and this city's been my home ever since. All those different places and cultures have definitely added some spice to my music and who I am. So there's a bit of my journey, a mix of places and flavours that make up my story!

What was your first set-up as DJ like?
Ah, my first DJ setup holds a special place in my journey. I started out with a Traktor controller – that was my gateway into the world of mixing and creating music magic. It was an exciting learning curve, getting familiar with the controls, experimenting with different tracks, and discovering the art of blending them together. That initial setup ignited my passion and set me on a path of musical exploration. Fond memories, for sure!

What is your favourite audience? How does your favourite audience behave?
I wouldn't say I have a specific favourite type of audience, as each crowd brings its own unique energy to the table. However, I do hold a deep appreciation for audiences that share a sense of unity and create a special atmosphere together. The best moments happen when there's a genuine connection among everyone present, where judgment is left behind, and egos are set aside at the door.
Of course, it's important to note that this kind of atmosphere is a two-way street. While the crowd plays a significant role in generating that positive vibe, the DJ also has a crucial role in fostering it. A DJ's ability to craft the right musical journey can enhance the collective experience and contribute to that special energy in the room. So, it's not just about the audience or the DJ alone; it's the beautiful synergy between them that truly makes a night electrifying.

Do you have your favourite performing clothes?
Definitely, when it comes to performing, my go-to choice is always clothes that prioritise comfort. Being on stage and delivering the best performance is my main focus, and I find that comfortable clothing allows me to move freely and really connect with the music and the audience. So, you could say my favourite performing clothes are the ones that make me feel at ease and in the zone.

What is the best thing about being a DJ?
Music is a major part of my life, both personally and professionally. It's been a driving force for as long as I can remember, and I always had this strong feeling that I would somehow be involved with music. Being part of the music industry gives me the opportunity to connect, inspire, and make a positive impact. Whether I'm composing, performing, or working behind the scenes, I'm able to express my voice and contributing to the vibrant and ever-changing art form.
I've dedicated myself to the world of music because it's my true passion. I've invested countless hours in honing my skills, exploring different genres, and I'll always try to keep pushing the boundaries of my creativity. I'm fortunate to have found a career that allows me to share my love for music with others and I definitely don't take it for granted!

What are the biggest challenges you face when DJing?
Tech Hiccups: Imagine you're in the zone, the crowd's loving it, and suddenly, boom, the gear decides to glitch out. It's like a DJ's worst nightmare.
Health Hustle: Staying healthy on the road isn't always easy. Fast food joints might be your only option between gigs, and finding time to exercise can be a challenge. Plus, the lack of sleep and constant travel can wear down your immune system.
Missing Moments: While you're out there spreading musical magic, life back home keeps moving. Missing birthdays, holidays, and everyday moments with friends and family can weigh on you.
Performance Pressure: Touring means you're performing in front of new crowds all the time. While it's exhilarating, it can also be nerve-wracking. Every night you're stepping on stage, trying to create that unforgettable experience while battling fatigue.
Finding Balance: Balancing the thrill of performing with the demands of travel can be a real juggling act. It takes some practice to keep your energy levels up, maintain your health, and still deliver top-notch performances night after night.
But in the midst of all these challenges, there's also an incredible sense of adventure and connection. You're out there sharing your passion with people all over the world, and those unforgettable moments on stage make it all worthwhile. It's like a crazy rollercoaster ride with a killer soundtrack!

What things makes a DJ better than others?
A standout DJ knows how to curate a playlist that resonates with the audience's vibe. They're skilled at reading the room and gauging what songs will keep the crowd engaged and dancing. They understand when to build excitement, when to give the audience a breather, and how to create a dynamic atmosphere that keeps people engaged. I believe that DJs who can take the audience on a journey through different moods and styles create a more immersive and memorable experience. In essence, a standout DJ is a combination of technical prowess, artistic creativity, emotional intelligence, and a strong commitment to both the music and the audience.

What is the key to be successful in DJing?
Cultivate a mindset that thrives on adaptability, coupled with the power of a unique style. Embrace the unexpected with confidence, turning challenges into chances to showcase your flexibility. Infuse your sets with your creative signature personalized musical choices. This combination of adaptability and a distinctive style not only sets you apart but also empowers you to create remarkable performances in any situation.

GraceDahl Szigetfesztival 202308112200 PartyArena 1

Do you prefer festivals or clubs more?
I must choose the intimate space ultimately. It's hard to beat that direct contact and engagement you're able to have with the crowd in a smaller venue, plus the sound/acoustics are almost always much better. They both carry their own unique charm though that call for totally different approaches, and it will always be exhilarating to have a sea of people in front of you dancing to your set.
However what you see frequently with huge crowds is that actually not a lot of dancing is going on, which goes against the whole point in my opinion. Seeing hundreds of phones lit up in the air, people close to standing still, waiting to catch the "mega banging drop" on film just doesn't really do it for me and my soul. I rather play for a smaller crowd where I can feel their energy closely and see true engagement with the music and each other.
On the other hand I find it important to reach these bigger crowds too. These are more often than not the places where newer generations have their first experiences in this genre and I feel that it's important to play a role in this, and who knows even be able to inspire to discover further. But I don't want to make compromises or feel any kind of pressure to play "bangers" to achieve this either... It's a conversation I often have with my surroundings and I'm positive it's possible to find and maintain a healthy balance within the two.
One thing I love about techno is that it is a type of music that doesn't ask and definitely won't beg you to like it, you either love it and are infatuated by it or you simply aren't interested at all. In a way I feel connected to that in regard to my way of being and the type of styles I choose to play. I've always been quite independent and a bit stubborn, and I believe I've applied the same independence within my taste in music and maybe even more so in my approach.

Are there any events you would like to play?
Oh yes, there's a world of events out there that I'd be thrilled to be part of. While I do have personal milestones in mind, I think it's equally important to acknowledge the amazing events and venues I've had the privilege to play at so far. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of chasing the 'next big thing,' which certainly fuels the fire within us. However, it's essential not to overlook the incredible opportunities we've already been blessed with. Each gig, each stage, each crowd – they've all played a significant role in shaping my journey as an artist. From intimate venues to larger festivals, every experience has been a stepping stone toward growth and fulfilment. So yes, while there's a horizon of exciting events on the radar, let's also take a moment to appreciate the incredible journey we're already on.

Is there an artist you would love to collaborate with?
There's a whole world of talented artists out there, and I'm open to collaborating with any of the names I mentioned earlier. Their innovative sounds and artistic perspectives align with my musical vision, and joining forces could lead to some exciting creations. As for dream collaborations, working alongside DJ Rush or Ben Sims would be an absolute thrill. Their influence on the techno scene and their unique styles would make for an unforgettable collaboration. The idea of blending their expertise with my own sound is a creative dream I'd love to see come true.

How do you feel about streaming services like Spotify in general and as a business model for artists these days?
From a neutral standpoint, streaming services like Spotify have definitely changed the way we listen to music. They make it super convenient to access a massive library of songs whenever and wherever we want. It's pretty awesome how you can discover new artists and genres with just a few clicks.
On the flip side, there's a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to artists. On one hand, streaming gives them a platform to reach a global audience and build a fan base. But the downside is that the per-stream payouts can be pretty small, which can make it tough for smaller or independent artists to make a decent living.
And let's not forget the algorithms – they're both a blessing and a curse. They help recommend music we might like, but they can also make it harder for lesser-known artists to get their tunes in front of listeners. Plus, there's a debate about fairness in how the streaming money gets divied up between artists, labels, and the platforms themselves. So, it's remains a bit of a mixed bag. Streaming has definitely transformed the music landscape, but there are still some kinks to work out, especially when it comes to making sure artists get their fair share.

Given the instant platforms/apps/marketing tools available to artists these days, would you maintain it's easier or harder for new artists to break through?
Regarding electronic music in general, the evolution has been quite fascinating to say the least. Most recently, the global health crisis has had a profound impact on the music industry, which has of course lead to many changes in how music is consumed, shared, and discovered. One notable change during and after the pandemic has been the surge of Techno's popularity on platforms like TikTok. The viral nature of TikTok has allowed electronic music to reach a much broader audience and gain widespread recognition. As an enthusiast of the underground nightlife, this shift has certainly stirred mixed feelings. On one hand, it's exciting to witness the genre gain such visibility and attract new fans who may have previously been unfamiliar with its unique sounds and energy. The accessibility and exposure provided by social media platforms have undoubtedly contributed to the growth and diversification of the community. This shift also raises questions and concerns about the commercialisation and commodification of it all. The genre's roots lie in underground movements and countercultural scenes, and myself and others sometimes worry that its essence and authenticity could be diluted or misinterpreted in the process of going viral on social media platforms.
Nonetheless, the evolving landscape of electronic music offers both opportunities and challenges. It opens doors for artists to connect with wider audiences, explore new creative possibilities, and reshape the perception of the genre. It's a reminder that music is a living, breathing entity that adapts and evolves with the times, reflecting the ever-changing cultural and social dynamics of our world. My feelings about the evolution of electronic music and the rise of Techno on social media is a blend of excitement, curiosity, and a desire to ensure that the genre's integrity and roots are preserved. It's a time of exploration, growth, and transformation, where the power of technology and social media intersects with the timeless allure of electronic music.

How do you find new music these days? And who are you currently enjoying listening too?
Discovering new music these days is a whole new ballgame, and I'm all in. The beauty of social media, SoundCloud, and platforms like Bandcamp has brought the world of DJs and producers right to our fingertips. It's like having this treasure trove of talent waiting to be explored. Personally, I've got a soft spot for the old-school techno vibes – there's something about those classics that just gets me. Labels and producers from back in the day still have a special place in my heart.
But let's talk about the present – there's this wave of young producers hitting the scene like a storm. Some names that have me hooked right now are Alarico, ANNĒ, Mathys Lenne, Sons Of Hidden, Not A Headliner, and Michael Ius. They are like a breath of fresh air, and their talent is undeniable. So I guess my music journey is this blend of nostalgia and excitement for what's new and next. It's a fantastic time to be a music enthusiast, that's for sure!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Any personal goals you have?
Release wise I definitely have some cool things coming up, with one of my most exciting releases to date planned for February 2024. I can't say much about any of them yet I'm afraid, but I hope to be able to share more on this very soon. Otherwise, for the past weeks I have been practicing the art of taking a moment to indulge and take everything in, after realising that many goals have become reality that where on the top of my "list". But as I mention often, the way of life for me is constantly being in motion, so naturally the act of taking a moment will probably be quite brief...
One of the long-term goals I am currently working on is to launch my own record label at a certain point. There is no hurry though, as I take this very seriously and want to make sure I am truly introducing something distinctive, when ever the time feels right.

Any message you want to shout out to the universe?
Stand behind your message and be confident in your skill and abilities. No one else will do that for you. Truly believe in your unique skill first and foremost, fulfil your passion and ambition with integrity — in a manner you would feel most comfortable doing so. All else will most definitely follow.
— Most importantly, don't let anyone dampen your spirit. You've got what it takes, and you're more than capable. Keep your head high and your dreams higher. This journey is yours to conquer!
